Workshops

The Highway Sanctuary hosts ongoing workshops in the form of classes, talks and performances.

These workshops are free to locals. Because we have limited space, workshop sign-ups are first come, first served. Most artwork created during classes will be added to our evolving 5 acre sculpture garden.

Our instructors are artists who are paid to share their process, skills, and experience with you. If you have an idea for a workshop and would like to be considered to lead one, please contact us. We’d love to hear from you!

Stuff it!” Rat Taxidermy class with Beth Allen
Saturday, May 11, 10-3pm

Register here.

Taxidermy is the art of preserving a dead animal - gutting it first, then mounting the skin over an artificial body.

In this 5-hour class students will learn how to skin, clean, preserve, stuff and mount a large rat (rats are bought frozen from the pet store where they are sold as snake food). Each student will leave with their own custom-made piece and all the skills they need to continue small animal stuffing on their own (if they so desire).

Beth will bring in samples of her own work to share.

This is a beginner class, no experience necessary. The only requirement is being willing to get messy and to not be squeamish! All materials and tools will be provided.

Class is limited to 5 students.

Due to the nature of the materials necessary for us to purchase for this class, we ask that you respect the time and resources of our organization and the instructor and please show up if you’ve registered. As always, registration is free, but please let us know if you are unable to attend so that we can give your spot to someone else.

Message Wendy with any questions.
